Philadelphia shelter animals, homeless teens gain mutual benefits – Interview with Rachel Cohen

Rachel Cohen is a 21-year-old student from Philadelphia who created the Hand2Paw project to help homeless teens and shelter pets benefit from each other. The unique program, started in 2009, has become a life-changing experience for those involved.

Hand2Paw now has two chapters in the city of Philadelphia alone – and big plans for the future.  A devout animal lover from day one, Rachel is also a Penn student, a research assistant at Penn Vet School, and has been nationally recognized for her work with Hand2Paw. She is a winner of the Washington Campus Compact’s Students in Service Awards and the winner of a DoSomething Grant.

We had a great time interviewing and learning from Rachel, and we’re excited to share with you her experiences, knowledge and mission in helping Philadelphia’s teens and pets. If you are looking to implement a program like this in your city, please feel free to contact Rachel directly for more information. We wish you the best in all your efforts, Rachel!
